The Diary of the Building of a 5" gauge Stirling Single

Completion of the build     Part 10

7th July 2019

I was convinced by my friend who loves good paint work to improve the finish of the boiler cladding and this also lead to a repaint of the cladding to go over the firebox.

The rolling gear was easily adapted as shown in the photo.

Also he was not content with the boiler bands so they have been painted white so that I only need to put the Black band down the middle rather than two white on the sides !!

8th July 2019

Another go at the boiler bands I decided to paint the white first and then add the black. I set the bands out on a board and held them down with pieces of Meccano.

With the held firmly in place and using the Beugler lining tool the black line was applied. It certainly went on better than doing two white lines but the bands are not of identical width thus the white edge lines are not uniform. Will the error show greatly when fully assembled ...Not as much as the previous white lines !!

12th July 2019

Today with a friend Paul of MMES we managed to assemble the boiler cladding back onto the boiler and secured with 8BA bolts on the underside.

Also we were able to re-assemble the boiler to the chassis.

6th August 2019

After a break for Summer Holiday I am back in the workshop.

Today I renewed the external parts of the tender axle boxes as the previous ones where not successful.

These are 3D printed parts and stuck on with Super Glue. They will be painted and the GNR picked out in white all being well!!

7th August 2019

The pieces were masked to prevent spraying on the parts that will rub whilst in the frames.

Etch primer sprayed on in readiness to paint tomorrow.

9th August 2019

Having let the etch primer cure for 2 days the axles boxes were given a coat of the LAKE colour

Also the tender frames were given thier second coat of LAKE paint.

10th August 2019

The Tender frames received the top coat of black.

So touching up is necessary as not able to reach all parts.

The stand previously recommended by a Keith Appleton on YouTube was augmented by placing it on my old Clay working "turntable" which made it so much easier to work on the frames only needing to turn the frames over when one side completed.

I still have the buffers to paint red.

11th August 2019

The buffer was painted red and some of the unpainted Black given a touch up.

Still more to do to finish the painting but wish to leave until fully dry rather than spoiling what has been done.

The axle boxes each have a drilled hole in thier top into which I fixed the bar which holds the suspension spring. The holes were drilled using the dummy springs as a guide so each one had to be fitted in the right place else they would not fit. Each axle box has a number on the rear so I will make a chart indicating the correct position.

12th August 2019

Primed the keepers for the Tender axle blocks in readiness for painting them black

13th August 2019

The last bit of lining out on the tender completed - not perfect but could be improved upon with more time but I will leave that for a "repaint" !!

From a distance it will look fine and etter than none !!

15th August 2019

The wheels were fitted into the axles boxes and the keepers secured in place.

The ledgend was applied to the underside of the Tender Tank so that when the pipework is connected they are attached to the correct place.

The Tender is now very nearly completed.

16th August 2019

Started the day with designing the Spring Bolts so that I can 3D print them as they are only dummies.

After the trial prototypes were made adjustment were made and the final ones 3D printed.

17th August 2019

Painted some of the parts for for the dummy spring bolts and they can be fitted tomorrow.

Then attention was turned to the pipework on the tender. A little more difficult than I had imagined due to the tight positions previously planned but first pipe bent to shape and nipple soldered to one end.

The fitting has to be tightened into final position and the actuator fitted.
